| The Coro Nacional de Jóvenes (National
Youth Choir of Argentina) depends upon the National Secretary of Culture.
It was created in 1985 in order to complete the choral activity cycle that
begins with the Coro Nacional de Niños (National Children's Choir) and
concludes with the Coro Polifónico Nacional (National Polyphonic Choir).
It is currently formed by 50 singers with
ages ranging from 18 to 30 years old. The CNJ is essentially an "a capella" organism; it's repertoire includes works from the Renaissance period to our days, as well as traditional argentine music in choral arrangements. It has often performed together with local and foreign chamber and symphony orchestras, premiering works of several Argentinian contemporary authors among which Cántico from Hilda Dianda (1988), Antonio Russo's Magnificat (1999) and St John´s Passion (2002) and Ranieri’s Requiem (2001) stand out. Ever since its creation, CNJ has offered more than 800 concerts in our country and abroad. Eighteen tours have been made to the provinces of Argentina, four to South America, four to Europe and one to the USA. The National Youth Choir of Argentina has released three CDs: the first one, Cuatro Siglos de Música Coral Latinoamericana (Four Centuries of Latin-American Choral Music), was nominated for the ACE awards in 1995; the second one, Musica Coral Romántica y Contemporánea, was published in 1998 and includes works from the XIX and XX centuries. Our third and most recent CD, Música de Nuestra Tierra (Music from our land, 2002), is entirely dedicated to choral arrangements of folk and popular songs from Argentina. Since 1995 CNJ won 24 international awards for its participation in international choral competitions taking place in South America and Europe, mainly: 1st Award and Grand Prix in Porto Alegre, Brazil (1995); Silver Trophy in Tolosa, Spain (1996); Grand Prix at the Florilège Vocal de Tours, France (1998). In 1999 it won the 1st award in the Harmonie Festival (Lindenholzhausen, Germany) and reached the 2nd place in the European Grand Prix contest at Varna, Bulgary. 1st Award at the 40º Chorwettbewerb (Spittal, Austria, 2003) in the categories of Polyphony and Folclore. In 1998 the CAMU-UNESCO (Consejo Argentino de la Musica) grand award was granted to CNJ and in april 2000 it was chosen by the Musical Critics Assosiation to be the Best Polyphonic Choir of the Season (1999). Ever since its creation in 1985, the choir has been conducted by
Néstor Zadoff. |
